Energy Efficiency

Education Sector

In October 2008 Aurora Power Solutions undertook an energy audit at a secondary boarding school in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. The audit and subsequent solution design identified opportunities to reduce the school's energy consumption by at least 20%, roughly equating to a R1.7 million saving over five years. Most of the proposed interventions require no or low capital investments, while the more expensive options expect paybacks of 3-7 years.

Aquaculture Sector

In September 2008 Aurora Power Solutions completed an energy audit at an aquaculture operation in the Western Cape. The energy Audit allowed APS to create an accurate breakdown of the power consumption in all parts of the operation. It also helped to analyse the risk and cost to the operation of future load shedding and energy price increases. Subsequently the report motivated a number of energy efficiency interventions with payback periods within 5 years. These included power factor correction, VSD drives for the present pumping schedule, and the installation of energy efficient fans and blowers.

Construction Sector

In October 2008 Aurora Power Solutions undertook an energy audit for a major construction company at their labour camps in the Western Cape. The Audit was a first phase assessment of the current energy use of the camps, specifically with regard to providing them with alternate power supply in areas where grid connection is not available and expensive to supply. The efficiency intervention phase of this project is due to start in the early part of 2009, with the intention to build a mobile power station which works from a solar and inverter system to supply the camps with power.

Mining Sector

In November 2008, Aurora Power Solutions has been contracted to investigate the potential for large scale renewable energy for one of Southern Africa's largest mining houses. This work will form the basis of a pre-feasibility study for the client.
